“Sickness”

Before December 15, 1973, being gay was treated like a mental problem. Many people who were gay at the time, were treated like they were crazy. So when DSM-II Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders took being homosexual off that list it proved that things would get better. Not to get off topic but in American Horror Story they touched on the topic vaguely. Back in the sixties if you were gay you had to keep it hidden, people often saw it as an illness that could spread. Which is why many people who were gay were held in mental hospitals. So when it was official that ‘hey it’s not an illness.’ many people who were gay and lesbian started to come out a bit.

My story called 'The Fall" I did a small bit of it for English to explain why it's hard for many people to come out.
My Story The Fall
When I was younger my aunt was ostracized from my family, she had a girlfriend in shorter terms. My family worried I would turn out liking girls they put me in things they think girls should do. So in basic terms, everything they thought was girly I did. But uh… We all know being gay is genetic not a choice, I still faked not liking girls, up until Amanda joined our Holbrook Middle School, I treated her like any other person I was friends with. Then the summer happened it was after Junior year and then… I had a girlfriend, I tried so hard to keep my image as the Straight Popular girl, I started falling out of that image, The straight part was fine, The popular part, the girl part… But I hurt a lot of people to keep that image. I became the classic mean girl, in all the movies and t.v. shows. I outed my girlfriend in front of the whole school, I made fun of my best friend since kindergarten because she was chubby, and I hurt everyone who has ever shown me the slightest compassion. I became the very thing I hated, I needed to change and that started with something small. I broke up with my ‘boyfriend’, I started hanging out with my old friend, I apologized to her a bunch of times, she forgave me but made me do something ‘embarrassing’ as in wear a purple tutu to school (I loved it). But I had to apologize to Amanda, and I had to do it in a big way. The Homecoming game was happening tomorrow night, I had to apologize there. When I got to the homecoming game I decided to mess with the message board, The message board puts on a message during the game Encouraging words for the football team, Reminding people to pick up their trash, and a personal message for the right price, meaning goodbye new Cherry red Porche that I was gonna pay with my birthday money. The game was… eventful we had a tie with Westerfield Wolves. That’s when my Message played more than likely, I would be booed but I had to do this. In case you were wondering what the message was it said this “HEY HOLBROOKE HIGH! MY NAME IS JANIS VALE!! I’M 18! AND I LIKE GIRLS!” that displayed in front of pretty much the whole student body, the whole staff, and their parents, and mine. It caused an uproar… but I wasn’t paying attention to them, I was paying attention to Amanda. She looked at me with such… hurt and happiness, that moment, however, was interrupted by my father who rather loudly said “YOU’RE A LEZZIE!’ he was coming down the stairs at a very fast rate, my mother was behind him, Amanda out of nowhere was right next to me. I knew at that moment that I was going to be okay even if my parents disown me, I know that I did something right. I was true to myself and that was worth the fall. |
